Home » Baseball NewsIt has become the story of the Jags season.June 7, 2011 Athens Drive High SchoolIt has become the story of the Jags season. 5 times this season, Athens has won the game in the bottom of the last inning. The Jags defeated Wake Forest Rolesville in their first round playoff game by the score of 2 to 1....with both runs scoring in the bottom of the 7th inning!! Ben Snotherly singled to lead off the inning. With one out, Eric Berger hit a ground rule double over the center fielder's head which bounced out, stranding Snotherly at 3rd. The Cougars intentionally walked Justin Reynolds to set up a potential game ending double play. That was not to be as Matt Proctor stroked a single up the middle to score Snotherly and Berger and end the game. The Jags hit the ball hard all game, but hit it right at someone. Chris Williams took the mound for the Jags and pitched a complete game, throwing only 66 pitches in 7 innings. Williams struck out the side in the first inning on 10 pitches. The Cougars managed back to back singles in the top of the second by the numbers 4 and 5 batters, and scored their only run of the game after a sac fly moved the lead runner to 3rd. A ball hit up the middle resulted in a fielder's choice which allowed the runner to score from 3rd. The play was only a split second late from being an inning ending double play. The Cougars would have only 1 more runner reach base on a single in the top of the 7th. Pitching: Chris Williams - 7 innings, 3 hits, 0 walks, 1 run, 5 strikeouts Offensively: Matt Proctor: 2-2, BB, 2 RBIs. Justin Reynolds: BB Eric Berger 2-3, 2B, 1R. Ben Snotherly: 1-3, 1R. Chris Williams 1-3. Thanks to the GREAT crowd support as we had a packed house. Please come out again on Tuesday as the Jags host East Chapel Hill at 4:30 in their second round playoff game.
