December 4, 2012By Duane Herr of ANNE ARUNDEL COMMUNITY COLLEGE
Playing against their third consecutive MD JUCO conference opponent the Anne Arundel Community College men’s basketball team looked to rebound from a conference loss last week and get back into the win column.
After losing their first game of the season in a one point loss to CCBC Essex on Friday night, the Pioneers hosted Allegany College of Maryland on Monday night with a goal of adding to their early season win column.
AACC entered the game at 6-1 overall and 1-1 in conference play. Allegany entered with a deceiving 2-7 overall and 1-2 conference mark. Allegany jumped on top of the Pioneers early and built a double digit lead that they would hold for most of the first half. The Pioneers chipped away and closed the gap to a nine point deficit entering the recess period.
In the second half AACC settled in and started playing their style of basketball. The Pioneers forced 28 turnovers and outscored Allegany 38-24 in the second half. The first Anne Arundel lead came with five minutes left on the clock and they wouldn’t lose it after that battling back for a 68-63 victory.
Jarvez Pierce was the leading point man for AACC and led the team down the stretch playing aggressive offense and smart defense to avoid picking up his fifth foul. Pierce finished with 19 points, shooting 7-9 from the free throw stripe. Jalen Lester scored 18 for the Pioneers including three big three point field goals. James Aorilio finished with 12 points and David Abraham added 7.
AACC men’s hoops play at home Wednesday evening when they host Montgomery College (5-4, 2-1 conf.) in a 7pm MD JUCO match up.
