Anne Arundel Community College hosted the first round of the NJCAA Division III Region 20 men's and women's soccer tournament on Tuesday night with both of their teams competing for semifinal spot in the tournament.
The women kicked off the double header feature competing against Westmoreland County Community College in a 5pm contest. The Pioneer women grabbed the lead early and kept it for the remainder of the game, shutting out Westmoreland 4-0.
The Pioneers scored all four of their goals in the first half. Sophomore's Meghenn Jackson and Brittany Leabhart each scored a goal and earned an assist. Katrina Chao and Katie Cox both scored a goal as well. Alex Scarsalleta connected for an assist. Women's goalkeeper Chelsea Clark-Ames earned two saves in the game.
With the win the AACC women advance to the semifinals against the #2 seed Oxford College at Emory University. That game will be played at AACC at noon on Thursday, October 25th.
In the night cap the AACC men's team hosted Prince George's Community College.
PGCC jumped on the board first connecting on a corner kick ten minutes into the first half. The Pioneers responded as Sanjay Forrest assisted Tyler Spence for the AACC goal to tie the game. The game would remain tied entering the half.
Right before the 60 minute mark the AACC men connected for their first lead of the game. Ryan Pollack scored on a throw in from Scott Scheerer to make it 2-1. Minutes later Tyler Spence would score his second goal of the game on an outstanding free kick from well beyond the 18 yard line.
PG responded in a matter of seconds with their second goal of the game making it a 3-2 Pioneer lead. The AACC men held off late efforts from PG to earn the 3-2 lead and a semifinal game on Thursday.
The Pioneer men will play top seeded Potomac State at 7pm on the 25th at AACC.
