AACC's Mary Milligan is WLAX Preseason Player of the Year
January 6, 2012By Duane Herr of ANNE ARUNDEL COMMUNITY COLLEGE
Lacrosse Magazine just released their 2012 preseason team rankings and honorees, with AACC’s Mary Milligan named preseason player of the year for the junior college division, and the Pioneer team ranked second in the nation following Monroe Community College, N.Y. who were national champions in 2010 and 2011.
While your online votes last November helped in Milligan’s selection (thank you!) she is exceedingly deserving of this honor based on her performance in her freshman season when she led the nation with 89 total offensive points (62 goals & 27 assists in 19 games) and was a first team NJCAA All-American. She is on schedule to graduate after the spring semester with an Associate of Arts in teaching in elementary education, and has recently committed to attend UMBC in the fall. She is a two-sport student-athlete who ran cross country for two years, and is a member of the Pioneers 2011 NJCAA Academic Lacrosse Team of the Year and the 2010 NJCAA Cross County All -Academic Team. She has 3.80 GPA, and is expected to earn an NJCAA individual academic award in her sophomore year if she continues her academic success in the upcoming semester.
The 2012 lacrosse team will start the season ranked second in the nation under the continued leadership of coach Jim Griffiths in his 9th season. At 109-23, Griffiths has the best coaching record in NJCAA history for women’s lacrosse since it became a sanctioned sport in 2004 - his first year as head coach. During his 8-year tenure he produced 24 All-Americans, won back-to-back national championships in 2006 and 2007, and took the runner-up trophy in 2004, 2005 and 2011. Griffiths is also the head coach for the AACC women’s soccer and cross country teams.
The 2012 lacrosse schedule is being finalized and will soon be posted at www.aacc.edu/athletics/wlacrosse.cfm.
