Mitchell sets new record in Lady Vikes win
January 6, 2014Princeton High School
Senior Kelsey Mitchell became Princeton's all-time career scoring leader after she surpassed 1,479 career points set back in 1987 by Tammy Svoboda in Saturday's 59-50 road win against the Lakota West Firebirds.
Despite foul trouble late in the second half, Mitchell scored a team-high 17 points to lead Princeton to its 8th win on the season.
The top ranked Lady Vikes used a 23 point second quarter to take a 32-31 lead at the break.
Princeton's bench, led by Corneisha Henderson and Jordann Bruenton with 8 and 7 points respectively, scored 17 points to help the Lady Vikes overcome adversity in a tough conference battle.
Carlie Pogue recorded her fifth consecutive double double, finishing with 10 points and 15 rebounds. Pogue currently leads the Greater Miami Conference with 10.6 rebounds per game.
As a team, Princeton shot 20 of 46 from the floor (43.5 percent), and knocked down 4 of 9 three pointers. The defense limited the Firebirds to just 28 percent shooting from the floor, and 22 percent from behind the arc.
Princeton (8-1, 5-0) will travel to Colerain on Wednesday, January 8 at 7:30pm.
