Vikings conclude excellent season
October 22, 2013Princeton High School
The Princeton boys' water polo team concluded its season after falling in the Ohio High School 2013 North Regional Water Polo Championships on October 18-19 at Mason High School.
The Vikings opened up Regional play against the St. Xavier Bombers. After an early goal by Jake Mazzone, both teams played even during the first half. After trailing 6-5 at the break, Princeton displayed excellent play on both sides of the ball to remain close in the contest. Down two goals in the final period, the Bombers were able to outscore Princeton 3-2 for the win.
Facing elimination, Princeton matched up against the Mason Comets that had lost two previous matches to the Vikings earlier in the season. The Comets jumped out in front 8-5, and extended its lead to 11-7 after three quarters of play. Fueled by determination and leadership by the seniors, Princeton rallied back to cut the deficit to two goals with under two minutes to play. Princeton left everything in the water, and came up with a huge steal that resulted in a Mazzone goal with a minute to play. Princeton's defense came up with another huge stop, giving the Vikings a final chance to extend the game to overtime with thirty seconds to play. Despite great execution from the offense, Mason's defense came up with an excellent stop to end the Vikings' outstanding season.
At the conclusion of the Regional Tournament, senior Jake Mazzone was named by the South Region coaches to the All-Regional team, an honor only six field players from seven teams receive. Mazzone finished the tournament with 15 goals.
