August 31, 2013Princeton High School
The Princeton Vikings opened up the 2013 season with a 48-10 victory over the Xenia Buccaneers on Friday, August 30 at Cox Stadium in Xenia, Ohio.
Senior Tyrell Gilbert recorded the first points of the season with a 16 yard touchdown run late in the first quarter.
The Vikings would never look back.
The up-tempo offense accumulated 487 total yards on 77 plays. The ground game, led by Elijah Harris, was too powerful for Xenia. Harris rushed for 142 yards on 19 carries, including a 20 yard touchdown run in the second quarter. The offensive line consistently won the battle in the trenches, and the Vikings eluded Buccaneers' defense for 350 total rushing yards.
Quarterback Tyrell Gilbert finished with 4 rushing touchdowns on 119 yards. Gilbert passed for 101 yards, including a 42 yard strike to Bryant Holloway. The receiving core was led by Damarcus Staley with 4 catches.
As impressive as the offense was, Coach Croley's defense set the tone from the beginning. Xenia was held to just 155 total yards. Junior Jibril Willingham finished the night with a team leading 6 tackles. The pressure forced 5 sacks (J.Zellars, R.J. Jenkins, J.Spells, K.Thomas, M.Matson) on Buccaneers' quarterback, Danny Naylor, who finished the night 14 of 26 for 132 yards through the air.
Princeton (1-0) will host Columbus Pickerington North on Friday, September 6 at Viking Stadium at 7:30pm. Fans are encouraged to wear grey.
