The Princeton Lady Vikings girls' basketball team defeated the Lakota West Firebirds 51-46 on Saturday, December 1 at Lakota West High School. Princeton improves to 3-0 on the season, and jumps out to 2-0 in league play.
The Lady Vikes would jump out to a 16-11 lead after the first quarter, but a sluggish second quarter from both teams would give Princeton a 25-18 lead heading into the locker room.
Junior Chelsea Mitchell took control on offense for Princeton, leading the Lady Vikes with 13 points on 6-12 shooting from the floor. Mitchell showed strong patience on offense and was able to attack the Firebirds' defense off the dribble. Chelsea would dish out 5 assists in the game, as Carlie Pogue was the frequent beneficiary under the basket.
Pogue recorded her second consecutive double double, recording 11 points and 11 rebounds.
Lakota West did not roll over in the second half, and would capitlize on open jump shots to cut the lead late in the fourth quarter. Nia Staples from West would lead all scorers with 18 points. The Firebirds would connect for 6 three-pointers, but the depth and timely baskets down the stretch by the Lady Vikes would seal the win for Princeton.
As a team, Princeton shot 20-45 (44.4%) from the floor, and outrebounded West, 32-27.
Princeton will travel to Lakota East on Saturday, December 8 at 2:00pm.
