Turnovers Haunt Vikings in Loss
September 24, 2012Princeton High School
The Princeton Vikings football team welcomed the LaSalle Lancers to Mancuso Field at Viking Stadium for a GCL/GMC battle on Friday, September 7.
The Vikings took the opening kickoff deep into Lancer territory, but failed to convert on fourth down. LaSalle would capitalize on the strong defensive stand, and the Lancer offense would run it in for a touchdown before the strong storms rolled into the area. Due to intense lightning in the area, the game would resume Saturday at 7:30pm.
Princeton would start Saturday with a very impressive drive, but failed to convert points after a costly penalty and missed field goal attempt. Lancers would score touchdowns on their next two possions to give LaSalle a 21-0 lead at the end of the first half.
The defense for the Vikings would respond on LaSalle's opening possession, as junior Darian Tucker would block and return the Lancers' punt for a 26 yard touchdown, cutting the lead to 14.
Princeton appeared to take the momentum from the Lancers, but costly mistakes on offense would prevent the Vikings to add more points on the board. LaSalle would return Jelani Parrish's punt for 33 yards, giving the Lancers a 21 point lead.
The momentum appeared to be erased as the Vikings had two questionable calls that officials said Princeton had stepped out of bounds, eliminating two potential touchdowns for Princeton.
The Lancers would capitalize on yet another Princeton turnover, as LaSalle quarterback Brad Burkhart would record his second TD of the evening.
Junior Tracy Fomby would finish an impressive drive with a 13 yard score. The defense would stand strong, forcing a 3 and out. However, the offense would turn the ball over.
Junior quarterback Tyrell Gilbert would connect with senior Demarco Thomas for a 5 yard touchdown, but it was too late.
The Vikings defense forced four turnovers, but the offense would turn the ball over five times in the loss. The offense recorded 363 total yards, and Demarco Thomas recorded 155 yards on the ground.
The Vikings (0-3) will travel to Colerain on Friday, September 14.
