Davidson County Sports Hall of Fame inducts new members

LEXINGTON - Five new members have been inducted into the Davidson County Sports Hall of Fame, according to the Lexington Dispatch.

Christy Hedgpeth, William Robert “Bob” Koontz, Hal Lackey, Bobby Suggs and the late Joseph “Scoop” McCrary were inducted into the hall in an event held at the J. Smith Young YMCA.

Hedgpeth was a member of Stanford's 1992 women's national championship basketball team, and Koontz played for the Wake Forest team that won the 1955 College World Series. He was a naval aviator and later a commercial pilot for Piedmont Airlines.

Thomasville native Hedgpeth scored 3,131 points while playing for Westchester Academy. The 5-foot-10 shooting guard averaged 32.2 points, 12 rebounds, six assists and five steals a game while leading the Wildcats to the 1990 NCISAA 1-A state championship.

Thomasville's Lackey spent 60 years as an athlete, switching over from the traditional sports of football, basketball and baseball to handball and racquetball later on. He won numerous championships before several eye surgeries retired him.

Suggs was a successful coach at both the junior high and high school levels.

McCrary, who passed away in 1972, was sports editor of the Salisbury Post from 1944-48 before coming to The Dispatch, where he held the same position as well as being city editor and chief photographer.
