Rocky Mount TelegramROCKY MOUNT - A former Rocky Mount High School basketball player was among five people arrested around 5 p.m. Thursday for allegedly conspiring to commit murder.
Rocky Mount police said Tashawn Michael Mabry, 19, and four other teenagers and men were stopped by police on the 1300 block of Raleigh Road after officers received a tip that several alleged gang members were planning a shooting. Officials stopped the vehicle, reportedly seizing four handguns and ammunition in addition to the vehicle.
Police Capt. Laura Fahnestock would not elaborate on who the alleged target was or what gang the suspects are allegedly affiliated with.
"We are being proactive in addressing all gang and other types of violent crime," Fahnestock said. "This is due in part to collaborations with federal agencies, such as the (Division of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms) and direct involvement with the community and the district attorney's office."
