Johnston County to open two new high schools next fall

November 1, 2009
By Charles Alston of North Carolina

SMITHFIELD - With a 34 percent increase in poulation since 2000, there's no surprise that Johnston County is one of the fastest growing counties in North Carolina, as well as the country.

Its population has ballooned to over 160,000.

To handle all that growth, the county will open not one, but two new high schools next fall.

Funding for the two schools were part of a $99 million bond referendum approved by Johnston County voters in May of 2007. With budget overuns, it is expected that both schools will exceed $42 million in costs by the time both are completed.

Both schools will have an enrollment capacity of around 1,800 students. Both are expected to house only freshmen and sophomores their first year. The two new schools will bring the county's high school total to eight.

Here is some information on them both: Corinth-Holders High School and Cleveland High School.

CORINTH-HOLDERS HIGH SCHOOL

This school will be located at 6875 Applewhite Rd. in northeastern Johnston County, but it will have a Wendell address (Wake County).

The school's colors will be purple and gold and its mascot will be a Pirate.

CLEVELAND HIGH SCHOOL

This school will be located at 1892 Polenta Rd in Clayton - in the northwestern part of the county. Its colors are Columbia blue and white and its mascot is a Ram.
