CHARLOTTE - When does a 45-point victory have your football coach so upset that he keeps part of his team on the field 10 minutes after everyone else has left? It happens when that coach is Independence's Tom Knotts, who watched his defense allow 461 yards of total offense against Myers Park one week before the Southwestern 4A showdown against unbeaten Butler. Luckily, Knotts' offense picked up the slack. Quarterback Anthony Carrothers threw for 439 yards and four touchdowns and added a rushing score as the Patriots (10-0, 5-0 Southwestern 4A) beat the host Mustangs (3-8, 2-4) 76-31.
"Our offense was incredible tonight," Knotts said, "and our defense sucked. It's 48 minutes out there and if we don't get better quickly we're going to get our (butts) kicked next week."
