Wilmington finishes unbeaten run through state Legion tournament

GRANITE FALLS – When the 2012 American Legion baseball season began, Cherryville Post 100 had hopes of setting a North Carolina Area IV record for consecutive titles while also becoming the first repeat state champion in 14 years.

Well, after Cherryville’s 11-1 loss Sunday to Wilmington at M.S. Deal Stadium, the record will show Post 100 accomplished half of those goals.

“It was a fun ride,” said Cherryville catcher Luke Kiser, one of eight Post 100 players who played his final game on Sunday. “They just hit it and made us make plays and that we didn’t make – not enough anyway.”

Cherryville finished 37-12 overall in a season in which it won a record sixth straight Area IV title and took its 5th N.C. runner-up finish.
