Partee named head boys basketball coach at Greensboro Smith

GREENSBORO — Derrick Partee wanted to stay with the Panthers.

He played four years and served as an assistant for 13 seasons under former Dudley boys basketball coach David Price. But when Price retired in March after three state championships and five title game appearances in 20 seasons, and Partee wasn’t selected to succeed his mentor at his alma mater, the desire to run his own program proved too great to ignore.

It didn’t take long for someone to give him that chance. Partee has been named the head boys basketball coach at Ben L. Smith, the Panthers’ fiercest rival.

“I was very loyal to Coach Price and to Dudley my whole coaching career,” Partee said, “and I pretty much told myself that I wasn’t going to try to get a head coaching job until he retired. I tried to get the Dudley job. And once I didn’t get that job … that kind of got my juices flowing, and I put my resume out there to a few places.”
