South Stanly rolls past Voyager in 1-A Game 1
June 2, 2012North Carolina
DURHAM -- South Stanly pitcher Russ Weiker pitched a no-hitter and the Rowdy Rebel Bulls gave him plenty of support in a 13-0 victory over Durham Voyager Academy on Saturday in the opening game of the North Carolina High School Athletic Association state 1-A baseball championship series at the Durham Bulls Athletic Park.
The game was halted after four and a half innings due to the 10-run rule. The opener had been rained out on Friday night.
Weiker struck out eight and walked three in picking up his 14th win in 15 decisions. Chad Sykes was the losing pitcher.
South Stanly scored three in the first, keyed by a run-scoring single by Mykel Golden and RBI doubles by Stephen Wallace and Grayson Short. Then the Rowdy Rebel Bulls blew it open with four runs in the third, with Weiker helping his own cause in the frame with a two-run single, and added six in the fourth.
Short's three-run homer was the big hit in the fourth for the Bulls.
Wallace had three hits in three trips for the winners while Short, Connor Ford and Golden had two hits apiece. Ford had a pair of doubles and two runs batted in.
South Stanly is 29-4, winning its 13th straight game, and is in the state finals for the third time in the last four years. Voyager has only freshmen and sophomores on the team at the relatively new school and is now 20-7.
Game two of the best-of-three is set for Saturday afternoon at five o'clock.
