PINETOPS - Former WNBA player Tynesha Lewis headlines the seventh induction class of the SouthWest Edgecombe High Athletic Hall of Fame, which will be enshrined as part of the school’s annual athletic banquet Monday night.

Lewis, who led the Cougars to the 1996 N.C. High School Athletic Association 3-A championship, will be joined by former track and field coach Robertine Pettaway and former cheerleading coach Cindy Harrell in bringing hall membership to 16. Previous inductees are Arthur Jackson (2006); Lee Hall, Cecil Long and Keith Pittman (‘07); Delphine Mabry, Walter Jones and Jimmy Tillman (‘08); Yancey Thigpen and Teddy Williams (‘09); Althea and Bridget Jenkins (‘10) and Kim Edmondson and Collins Hines (‘11).

Lewis was a four-time All-Atlantic Coast Conference player at N.C. State University prior to a six-year WNBA career. She was drafted by the Houston Comets and played there for two seasons before going to the Charlotte Sting for three-plus seasons. Now a Fayetteville resident, Lewis finished her career with the Minnesota Lynx in 2006.

Pettaway, a Wilson resident, was the SWE track coach for many years, including her first year when she coached hall-of-fame member Delphine Mabry. She also taught Exceptional Children at the school.

Harrell guided the Cougars to four national cheerleading championships as well as one N.C. High School Athletic Association crown. She began her coaching career at South Edgecombe Middle. She currently is a guidance counselor at SouthWest.

The banquet will begin at 6 p.m. in the school cafeteria with the induction ceremony to follow. The proceedings will move to the Sandra Shelton Langley Gymnasium for the athletic award presentations at approximately 7:15 p.m. Athletes on 2011-12 teams will be given tickets but admission price for their guests and all other attendees will be $8. Tickets can be purchased at the school from Coach Langley until 4 p.m. Friday. No tickets will be sold at the door. Please telephone 252-827-5016, ext. 7130, for more information.
