CARY - One day after Panther Creek appealed to the N.C. High School Athletic Association, hoping to receive a wild card bid to the 4-A boys basketball playoffs, the NCHSAA responded in writing.
Panther Creek had the second best overall record of teams not automatically selected to the playoffs, but the Catamounts' 11-12 record was passed over for the last wild card spot for High Point Central, which reports a 10-14 record.
The NCHSAA says their policy is to select one wild card team from the east and one wild card team from the west, but Panther Creek says that is not what the new seedling criteria says.
"While I understand your position in this matter, I would like to clarify a number of points you reference below," NCHSAA Commissioner Davis Whitfield said in a letter to Panther Creek Athletic Director Tod Schuler, Principal Rodney Nelson, and Wake County Senior Director of Athletics Bobby Guthrie.
