Murphy coach Gentry's job is in question

MURPHY - Even as Murphy football coach David Gentry nears the Western North Carolina record for career wins, he belongs to a growing group of statewide educators awaiting word on their job status.
Gentry (285 victories) needs only 17 more to surpass former Sylva-Webster High coach Babe Howell (301).
But with North Carolina considering a budget cut of more than $1 billion from public schools, systems like Cherokee County Schools have no guarantees that they can bring back employees like Gentry. Gentry, 63, has been working on a year-to-year contract as the Bulldogs' athletic director, football coach and a physical education teacher since qualifying for retirement in 2005.
