KENANSVILLE - Athletics in Duplin County are safe for the coming school year.
In front of more than 300 people, with hundreds more gathered outside in drizzling rain, the county commissioners unanimously moved to unrestrict $500,000 and direct it to be used to for the county schools' athletic programs. The commissioners also moved $350,000 to fund JROTC. "It's great that they're going to move that line item money over to athletics. It funds us. We'll pay the coaching supplements," said Wallace-Rose Hill athletic director Tim Jenkins. "The whole bottom line was if we weren't going to have the coaching supplements, some of the coaches wouldn't have coached.
"We are going to get funded next year, that's great. We hope that continues."
