SYLVA — Needing just five points to reach 1,000 for her career, East Henderson junior Stephanie Smith wasted little time in reaching the milestone Wednesday night at Smoky Mountain.
She drained six 3-pointers in the first half and had another in the second half to finish with a game-high 32 points, but it wasn't enough as the Lady Eagles lost 67-47.
Smith had 23 points in the first half, which helped East jump to a 30-28 lead by halftime.
But Smoky Mountain charged back in the second half, outscoring the Lady Eagles 39-17.
Smith, who now has 1,027 career points, was the only double-digit scorer for East, which fell to 1-11 and 0-4 in the WNC Athletic Conference.
The Lady Eagles return home Friday to host Franklin, and East will be honoring Smith prior to the game.
