Drew High School’s football program made its mark last season in their big upset win against Eastside High School- proving that head coach Jarrett Laws has something good going. Although the school itself was built only a few years ago, the team has already produced some notable players.
“As a sophomore I had 32 tackles, seven pass breakups, and an interception,” said then junior, Devon Miller. “I ran a kickoff back for a touchdown that year (sophomore season), too. And I had a punt return for a touchdown. This past season I had a nagging injury at the beginning of the year. I didn’t have any returns last season because of that.”
“Last year I played mainly as a cornerback. In two of our games I played at safety. I had 40 tackles, 12 pass defenses, two interceptions. On offense I had one catch for 58 yards. I made the First Team All-Southern Crescent (Clayton and Henry County combined) last year,” said Jadarius West, who graduated last year and accepted an offer from the University of Kentucky.
Drew’s player to watch out for this season is Darrion Bell. With his great feet and high level of intelligence (maintaining a 3.6 GPA), Bell can play every offensive line position on the high school level. As a sophomore he was a 2nd Team All-Region performer. His solid height (6’1’’) and wingspan (6’4’’) will only help him in his senior season.
