Monday, Apr. 21 -- Through five innings on Monday night, Menifee County senior pitcher Erika Brewer struck out 12 Bath County batters and allowed just two hits. But in the sixth, the home standing Lady Cats rallied to score twice off three consecutive hits all with two outs to pull off a 2-1 victory over their 61st District rivals.
It was the first district win of the season for Bath County (8-13), which evened its home record this season to 5-5 while playing for just the first time in two weeks in Owingsville. It marked the third straight meeting between the two teams that one run decided the final score.
Both squads tallied singles in their opening at bats, but Menifee County (5-7) collected a pair of first-inning hits with both runners moving into scoring position. However, the inning ended with Liz Dotson being tagged out at home on a fielder’s choice.
Brewer surrendered a single to Bath County leadoff batter Hannah Mann, but five of the next six batters were felled by Brewer strikes. Menifee County broke the scoreless drought in the top of the fourth after leadoff batter Ailee Lawson reached base on an infield single. She then stole second base and advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt. Lawson scored on a two-out fielder’s choice to the pitching circle, but Bath County’s Morgan Howard was unable to get the ball to home plate in time to get Lawson.
Brewer struck out at least two batters in the first five innings. However in the bottom of the sixth, Taylor Everman reached base with a two-out bunt single. Howard followed with a blast just inside the right-field line that scored Everman from first. Howard moved to second on the play and came home during the next at bat, a Taylor Moore single to right field.
Menifee County went down in order in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings to secure Bath County’s come-from-behind victory.
Howard earned the win after going the distance and allowing three hits and two walks, while striking out six. She also scored the game-winning run and drove in another after finishing 1-for-3 at the plate. Everman led the hosts with two hits. Brewer suffered the loss after pitching six innings and allowing two earned runs on five hits. She finished with 13 strikeouts and no walks. She also was 1-for-2 at the plate.
