Pendleton prevents Bracken from another last-second comeback
April 29, 2014By Brad Laux of 1016sports
Friday, Apr. 18 -- Six days after scoring seven runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to claim an 11-10 come-from-behind home victory, the Bracken County baseball team’s attempt at another last-second rally fell just short on Friday night against Pendleton County.
The visiting Wildcats held a 5-2 lead entering the bottom of the seventh inning, but the Polar Bears reeled off three straight hits and eventually put the tying run to second base, but Pendleton County relief pitcher Josh Brown ended any thoughts of Bracken County’s repeat of the Nicholas County game by striking out the next two batters and corralling a hard-hit line drive and throwing it over to first base to secure the victory.
The Wildcats won despite collecting three hits. However, it was the Polar Bear defense that kept the hosts from improving their home record to 6-1 this season. Bracken County committed seven errors on the night, which led to four unearned runs.
Starting pitcher Chris Wills threw five and two-thirds innings and allowed three hits and two walks, while striking out six, but still suffered the loss.
Freshman center field James Miller, batting ninth in the Polar Bear lineup, led the team’s offense with a single, double, sacrifice bunt and a run scored. It was the fifth straight win for Pendleton County, which moved over the .500 mark for the first time this season.
Pre-game notes: Friday baseball Bracken County (8-1) will host Pendleton County (7-7) at 5:30 p.m. This year, BC is 4-1 within the region, while PC is 1-4. Today’s contest is the first of two meetings this season. The teams are expected to again play on May 5 in Falmouth. BC is in the middle of an eight-game home stand. The Polar Bears won their last outing – a 25-3, five-inning decision over Covington Latin on Wednesday. BC is 5-1 at home this season. PC has rebounded after a slow start to its 2014 campaign and has won its last four outings. Today is the third contest of five in a row on the road. The Wildcats sport a 4-4 record away from home, including winning their last two contests, 16-1 in five innings over Robertson County yesterday and 6-1 at Lloyd Memorial on Saturday. Bracken County has won the last three match ups, including 5-4 on Apr. 25, 2013, in Brooksville, and 4-1 at home on April 10, 2013. The Polar Bears also won at home in their lone meeting in 2012. The Wildcats captured a 12-9, eight-inning victory in Brooksville in their 2011 regular-season finale, which took place on May 21.
