Bracken rallies to top Brossart in All "A" semis

Saturday, Apr. 12 -- Behind the pitching of Emma Conley, the Bracken County Lady Bears captured their first 10th Region All “A” title since 2011 with a pair of wins on Saturday. Bracken County (7-6) opened the day with a 5-3 semifinal victory over Bishop Brossart (8-6) and capped it off by in a 10-0, five-inning win against two-time defending champion Nicholas County (5-8). Conley earned the win in all three of the Lady Bears’ tournament games, including a 5-0 victory over home standing Paris on Wednesday.
In the championship, Bracken County took a 3-0 lead in the first inning and never looked back. Cassidy Jefferson paced the Lady Bears at the plate by finishing 4-for-4 with six RBI. She jump-started the scoring with a two-run double in the first inning, eventually scoring to give the Lady Bears a 3-0 lead. Brooke Woods (four runs) and Conley (three runs) reached base during each plate appearance. In the circle, Conley pitched a complete game, allowing just three hits and no walks, while striking out one.
In the semifinal win over Bishop Brossart, Jordan Wills went 3-for-4 with an RBI and scored a run. The Lady ‘Stangs jumped out to a 2-0 lead after crossing the plate once each in the first and third innings. MacKenzie Jefferson put the Lady Bears ahead with a bases-clearing double in the bottom of the fourth inning. Emma Conley helped her own cause by finishing 2-for-2 at the plate. She went the distance for the win, allowing just five hits and two earned runs, with three strikeouts and one walk. Allison Conley and Cassidy Jefferson each added hits for the victors.
Bracken County will advance to the state tournament in Owensboro, which will take place Apr. 26-27. The Lady Bears will be grouped in a pool with Raceland, Louisville Holy Cross and the winner of Region 1. It will be the team’s fourth appearance at the state tournament, having also advanced in 2011, 2009 and 2005.
