Monday, Mar. 24 -- Visiting No. 5 Raceland (4-0) scored three runs in the final two innings to rally to a come-from-behind softball victory over West Carter (0-3) on Monday in Olive Hill. The Lady Comets led 3-1 after five innings, but the visitors took advantage of West Carter mistakes, while rattling off three RBI hits, to claim a 4-3 win.

Junior Kelsey Diller led the way by driving in the game-tying run, while also pitching the team to the complete-game victory. Diller finished the day 2-for-4 at the plate, while allowing just one earned run, four hits and a walk in the circle. West opened the scoring when Leatha Reynolds singled to begin the fourth inning. She eventually scored on a Madison Patrick RBI single.

The Lady Rams answered with a run off a Lady Comet error in the fifth, but West Carter scored twice (one on an infield throwing error and the second on Reynolds’ double to center field) in the bottom of the frame to push back ahead.

In the sixth, Raceland closed within a run after Lacee Penix and Morgan Curley each drew back-to-back two-out walks, and Taylor Podunavac’s infield single drove in Penix. Diller induced three groundouts to retire the Lady Comets in the bottom of the frame. In the seventh, an error during leadoff hitter Samantha Mackie’s at bat put a Lady Ram runner on base.

Diller hit a one-out single to center field and Leigh Grubb followed with an RBI double to give Raceland its first lead of the day. Diller finished the game by striking out the first two Lady Comet batters and then inducted a fly ball out in the bottom of the seventh to secure the win.

Reynolds suffered the loss despite striking out nine and allowing just two earned runs in a complete-game effort for the Lady Comets. She also had two of her team’s four hits as well as both driving in and scoring a run. Patrick added the other two hits and an RBI. Grubb and Podunavac each added two hits for the Lady Rams, which improved their road record to 2-0 and notched their best start to a season since 2003.

Pre-game notes: Softball Monday 5:30 p.m. No. 5 Raceland (3-0) at West Carter (0-2). The Lady Rams opened the season last week with a trio of wins, defeating Rowan County 10-0 in five innings, Fairview 8-2 and Fleming County 13-6. Today is the final game for Raceland before heading to Myrtle Beach for a five-game Spring Break trip. The Lady Rams are 1-0 on the road this season (Fairview). Last year, Raceland posted an 18-15 record and struggled down the stretch run finishing just 2-5 in its last seven games. Six of those contests came on the road where the team posted a 2-4 record. West Carter is playing its third home game of the season. The team dropped a 9-4 decision to Fairview last Tuesday and then a 10-4 contest to Russell on Thursday. The Lady Comets were 12-14 last season, including posting a 5-7 mark at home. Overall, WC has dropped its last three games in Olive Hill. Last spring, the two clubs split a pair of games at Raceland. The Lady Rams won 7-1 on Apr. 29 and West Carter won 10-9 on Mar. 22. Raceland won twice at home in 2012, 4-0 on Apr. 12 and 6-1 on May 17. The Lady Comets captured the lone meeting in Olive Hill 5-4 on Mar. 19. West won a pair of matchups in the 2011 campaign.

Thanks for covering this game. The Lady Rams are off to a good start and will Battle Russell Monday in Flatwoods, beating them for the 1st time in a long time 6-4 just a few days ago. The 6 time Defending 63rd District Champions look to even the score as the two face off again, this time in Flatwoods, KY (home of the Red Devils).
