13 YEARS AGO (1997): Bloomington North 75, Delta 54

April 15, 2010
100 Years in 100 Days

On Saturday, March 22, 1997, the IHSAA held its 87th and final boys single class basketball tournament. Over 26,000 spectators watched the Bloomington North Cougars overpower the Delta Eagles 75-54 to win the title. Bloomington North became the 49th different team to win a state championship title. Cougar Coach Tom McKinney won his first ever state championship, joining 61 other coaches at that time.

Bloomington North, rated number one in post-season play, showed why they deserved the ranking. Senior forward Ryan Reed and junior forward Kueth Duany led the Cougar scoring, each garnering 17 points. Patrick Johnson and Rob Robbins each scored 13 points for Delta. But a great overall performance gave Bloomington the state championship trophy.
